History of S Anne's Scout Group

The Scout Group was founded in 1921 by a Mr G Lant-Harrison assisted by Mr CHS Justice. It has functioned continuously ever since its foundation, making it the longest running Scout group in the district. It has always provided a high level of scouting activities and opportunities to both St Anne's parish as well as the rest of the Worksop district and surrounding area.

Over the years it has produced some 18 King Scouts and 19 Queen Scouts and has had representatives at World Jamborees at Arrow Park 1929, Hungry 1933, France 1947, Canada 1955, Sutton Coldfield 1957, Greece 1963, Japan 1971, Korea 1991 and Holland 1995.

The group was able to operate throughout World War II under the leadership of Fred Thompson and even managed week long annual camps during the summer time, despite the rigours of food rationing. During this time, sadly five members of the Rover crew were killed whilst on active service.

During this period the group was engaged in the collection of waste paper for the war effort. Collecting paper was again started in 1970 and continued until 1992 to be replaced with the collection of aluminium cans. The Group has a long record of service to the community.

Throughout the late forties and early fifties the Group, along with other church organisations, managed to produce a week long annual pantomime at around the New Year. The success of the production was such that the old St Anne's Hall was full to its seating capacity of 300 every night!

Many of our members have gone on to become leaders within our own group and also to start other scout groups. Some have gone on to be Commissioners at District and County level.

The Group is also proud of the fact that they built their own headquarters which took three years and was opened in 1961. The building work took place mainly every Sunday morning and one of the first jobs was to hand dress and clean 10,000 bricks for use on the foundations and inside walls. On completion the building had cost £1,300. In 1980 the group were able to purchase the land on which the building stood. Then in 1993 it was decided to improve and update the existing building. An ambitious scheme was devised and the task was completed in 2003 costing £110,000 all of which has been raised by the Group. The scout headquarters has been made available to other community activities and functions.

St Anne's Scout Group has always kept up-to-date with the latest trends in scouting, though not always agreeing with all of them. In every way the Group has always exerted a strong beneficial influence upon the lives of the boys, and more recently girls, throughout the parish, Worksop district, and the County of Nottinghamshire .
